The Test Kit detects the presence of Nickel.
99.9% of all Meteorites contain Nickel in amounts
100 times more abundant then any rock found on Earth.
Dimethylglyoxime is the main ingredient used which
detects Nickel in a Meteorite.
Dimethylglyoxime is provided in the kit, it is mixed
with Muratic Acid found at any
hardware store, along with distilled water, it becomes
solution "A".
Common clear household ammonia becomes solution "B".
Testing
Procedure:
Step 1 - Place approx:
a Pea sized sample of the material to be tested,
which has been broken into small pieces or powdered,
into a glass vial.
Step 2 – Shake solution
(A) well for 30 seconds then add 4 drops to the
glass vial with the material to be tested, tighten
cap and swirl vial for a 30 seconds.
Step 3 – Immediately add
20 drops of solution ( B ) to the glass vial with the material being
tested from step #2, tighten cap and swirl for a few
seconds. Let stand for approx. 5 min..
Solution will turn a bright Red to Purple color (depending
on the nickel content) if Nickel is present,
which is a good indicator you may have a Meteorite.
